The town built on fish

This driving tour stops at breathtaking viewpoints that show exactly why Petersburg is known as "the town that fish built." Your guide picks up guests and sets off past Petersburg's three harbors, revealing just how much commercial fishing is the backbone of our community: home to the world's largest halibut fleet, and once the shrimp capital too.

From there, we head through town sharing Petersburg's history and the businesses that grew up around the fishing fleet and their families, passing processing plants along the way and their impact on the town. Next is the Whale Observatory at the north end of the community, before the tour ends at Sandy Beach Recreational Park with stories of the local Tlingit people and their fish traps dating back thousands of years.

We had a trip of a lifetime! Traveled 7 nights and stayed at a remote cabin in The Chugach National Forrest that was remote, accessible by float plane. We used Rusts Flying service to fly us in and out of the cabin and then also to Cresent Lake in the Lake Clark National Park by float plane.

With our input, Viking Travel planned everything for us making it so easy. Our stay at Glacier Bay Lodge was magnificent as was our catamaran cruise on Glacier Bay and our guided bear excursion which included a spectacular floatplane ride. Itinerary was very easy follow. We had an incredible time!
