SINCE 1981
Family owned and operated for 45 years.
Founded in 1981 by Dave and Nancy Berg, Viking Travel started as an air ticket and Alaska ferry business and grew from there. As online booking took over, the Bergs saw what the internet couldn't replace: custom Alaska travel built for independent tourists. Over four decades, they and their staff planned journeys for thousands—then passed the business to James and Madeleine Valentine in early 2023.
Today, Viking Travel still builds custom Alaska packages and books small ship expedition cruises, charter yachts, backcountry lodges, and handles local cruise ship logistics in Petersburg, Alaska. The service has never changed: personal, friendly, and built to take the stress out of travel planning.

nestled in the heart of Southeast Alaska.
Our office is located in Petersburg, Alaska, a fishing town nestled in the heart of Southeast Alaska. Our Norwegian and Tlingit heritage combine to make this a thriving, culturally vibrant community, with the self-sufficiency and isolation characteristic of many Alaskan communities.
Petersburg celebrates its Norwegian heritage with the annual Little Norway festival every third weekend of May, in honor of Norwegian Constitution Day. The festival features traditional dancing and music, a parade, and even a marauding crew of Vikings and Valkyries. Petersburg is also home to excellent fishing and whale watching grounds as well as the jumping off point for visiting LeConte Glacier, North America’s southernmost tidewater glacier.

45 years charting the secrets of Alaska.
We are not a corporate cruise line machine or an AI travel planner that just connects the dots. When you pick up the phone you will be connected with a real person who works, lives, and plays in Alaska. We know the best spots to visit and can make suggestions based on your must do’s and must see’s. You bring your people: a leadership team, a group of old friends, a family reunion that deserves better than a buffet line. We handle the rest: the itinerary, the logistics, the bookings. We don’t call ourselves luxury, but we’re premium in every way.

Weather in Alaska is unpredictable, so it is important to pack layers for your trip so you can adjust and be comfortable. Quick dry material is always a good choice for outdoor excursions and sensible, well broken in shoes are key! Light gloves, warm hat, brimmed hat, and sunglasses are all good items to have for glacier viewing or boat trips. We like to say there’s no bad weather in Alaska, only bad gear!
